President Trump delivered a full-throated defense of his first year back in office in his 2026 State of the Union address on Tuesday, touting his record on immigration, the economy, tariffs and more. The president claimed responsibility for a “turnaround for the ages” while calling on Congress to enact several of his administration’s initiatives.

Republicans offered raucous applause over the course of the speech, while Democrats mostly sat in silence. Some Democratic lawmakers vocally pushed back on the president’s remarks, most notably in a section on immigration and fraud.

Trump honored many servicemembers and guests in the House gallery, including the gold medal-winning U.S. men’s hockey team, who received a bipartisan standing ovation. He presented Medals of Honor to two individuals, including a 100-year-old Korean War veteran.

Abigail Spanberger delivers Democratic response

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger criticized President Trump’s record on affordability during the Democratic response to the State of the Union address Tuesday night, as the party sought to counter the president’s message.

The Virginia governor claimed that during Tuesday night’s State of the Union, “we did not hear the truth from our president.” And while she repeatedly criticized the Trump administration and the chaos Democrats say it has inflicted on the U.S., her address focused heavily on affordability.

🚨BREAKING: 229–206 House IMPEACHMENT Vote — 17 Republicans Join Democrats in RARE Two-Party Coalition⚡ The House of Representatives has impeached the President with a vote of 229 to 206, marking the most bipartisan presidential impeachment in U.S. history, with 17 members of the president’s own party voting in favor. Unlike past impeachments focused on scandal or misconduct, this case centers on a constitutional issue: the president’s refusal to comply with a Supreme Court ruling. Supporters of impeachment argue that defying the Court threatens the separation of powers and the rule of law. The president has rejected the impeachment as illegitimate and says he will not participate in the Senate trial. The Senate will now hold a trial presided over by the Chief Justice, and conviction requires a two-thirds majority — 67 votes. That means at least 16 senators from the president’s party would need to join the opposition for removal. The outcome will determine not just the president’s future, but how strongly judicial authority is enforced against executive resistance in the American constitutional system.
