In a major development amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, the United Kingdom has declined to take part in offensive strikes on Iran alongside the United States and Israel, choosing instead a more cautious, defensive‑focused military role that has ignited political controversy at home and abroad.

What the UK Has Decided

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, the UK has firmly stated that it will not participate in offensive airstrikes or military operations aimed at regime change in Iran. Starmer told Parliament that the government’s priorities are the defence of British lives, legal accountability, and regional stability — and that involvement would be limited to defensive measures only.

Despite this, the UK has allowed the United States to use British military bases — including RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and the strategic Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean — to support defensive operations targeting Iranian missile infrastructure. British officials have emphasized that this authorisation is carefully defined under the banner of collective self‑defence, focused on safeguarding British and allied lives, not offensive warfare.

Confirmation of US Bombers on British Soil

Reports confirm that multiple US bomber aircraft, including B‑52s, have arrived in the UK under this agreement, preparing to launch missions against Iranian missile targets. British Prime Minister Starmer reiterated that the UK “does not believe in regime change from the skies” as part of its defence posture.

Reactions From Washington

The policy shift has drawn sharp criticism from US President Donald Trump, who publicly rebuked Starmer, questioning the timing and value of British support. Trump even claimed on social media that Washington no longer needed British military carriers and stated, “We don’t need people that join wars after we’ve already won.”
