Did Whoopi Goldberg follow Ellen DeGeneres in leaving the US for UK? Viral post debunked
Rumors of Whoopi Goldberg leaving the United States have been circulating online. The claims began after Facebook user @SpaceX Fanclub shared a post alleging that the actress left the country in order to relocate to the United Kingdom following Ellen DeGeneres (who left earlier). It included a fake quote by Goldberg, saying:
However, the rumors are false, and the post was fake and satirical. The post included an in-picture warning, “Rated satire.” It further read:
“Nothing on this page is real. If you believe anything we post, then you’re potato crop.”
Moreover, the Facebook page @SpaceX Fanclub’s profile explains that it is a “satire/parody” page and that “nothing on (the) page is real.”
@SpaceX Fanclub’s post builds on an earlier post claiming DeGeneres left the country and “vow(ed) to never come back.” It was alleged that this wasn’t the America she wanted.
The parody article claimed Whoopi Goldberg brought an “art studio” with a “reading nook” in the English Countryside
The Facebook post included a link to an article by Esspots, a similar parody news website. The report claimed that both Whoopi Goldberg and Ellen DeGeneres were “longtime advocates for social justice.” It was alleged that the two personalities cited the state of the country since Donald Trump’s win in the 2024 U.S. elections as the reason for their departure.
It included a fake quote by Whoopi Goldberg taken at Heathrow Airport, saying:
“I’ve spent years trying to wake people up. But now? Now I need some sleep—and I’m not going to find it in America.”
The article claimed that the two women announced their relocation in a joint Instagram statement. The IG post allegedly featured the pair sitting in a British tea shop, sipping Earl Grey and munching on scones,” with Ellen stating:
“It’s bittersweet… But this is where we need to be right now. England feels like the home America used to be.”
Per Esspots, in the mock Instagram post, Whoopi Goldberg is seen nodding her head and commenting:
“At least here, the politicians are upfront about being a mess. No gaslighting, just bad wigs and cricket metaphors.”
The report alleged that Sister Act star brought an “art studio” with a “reading nook” overlooking the English countryside.
The article also claimed that president-elect Donald Trump addressed Whoopi Goldberg and Ellen DeGeneres’ departures, calling the two women “overrated” and that they would be “begging to come back when they see how much tea costs over there.”
The rumors were further fueled after Goldberg’s reaction to finding Trump won the election. Per a report by Variety, on the November 6 episode of her talk show The View, the actress refused to say Trump’s name.
Moreover, recent reports claim Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have put their multimillion-dollar home in Montecito, California, on sale. According to an article by the Wrap citing “a person close” to DeGeneres, the couple has gone to the Cotswolds in South West England and plan to “never return.”
Neither Ellen DeGeneres nor Portia de Rossi have publicly reacted to the development.
