Elizabeth Olsen & Carrie Coon’s New Netflix Movie Is Harder To Watch After $2 Billion MCU Hit’s Brutal Death Scene
Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon have an unlikely reunion in the new Netflix family drama His Three Daughters. Written and directed by Azazel Jacobs (French Exit, The Lovers), His Three Daughters was released on Netflix on September 20, 2024. The film takes place in a New York City apartment where a man named Vincent is suffering from cancer. His three adult children, all daughters, are somewhat estranged but are forced to face each other and live together while also grasping the impending death of their dad.
Coon and Olsen lead the cast of His Three Daughters along with 5-time Emmy nominee Natasha Lyonne. The film originally premiered over a year ago at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2023. His Three Daughters debuted with a near-perfect 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, becoming one of just a handful of movies to join the prestigious Rotten Tomatoes 99% club, which has generated some early Oscars buzz. Although Lyonne, who will enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, had not previously worked with either actor, Coon and Olsen both appeared in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.
Although they have both appeared in two very different movies, Carrie Coon and Elizabeth Olsen’s first onscreen collaboration was in Avengers: Infinity War. However, it was much more than just a mutual appearance, as Coon’s CGI-animated villain character Proxima Midnight was graphically killed by Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch during the climactic battle at the end of the blockbuster. Olsen’s Wanda saved Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow by using telekinesis to lift Proxima Midnight into the air, where she collided with a passing armored vehicle known as a Thresher.
In His Three Daughters, Olsen’s Christina and Coon’s Katie aren’t quite at the point of killing each other but do have a great deal of conflict that fuels much of the tension between them. Adding Lyonne’s Rachel to the mix makes for even more disagreements and harsh words that hit home in revealing and painful ways. While Avengers: Infinity War is one of the biggest blockbusters ever made, His Three Daughters could not be more of an opposite movie, filming mostly in one location and having a cast of just nine actors, most of them in supporting roles.
The True Story Behind Proxima Midnight’s MCU Death Makes Carrie Coon & Elizabeth Olsen’s Reunion Even Better
Neither of them had any idea that Olsen’s Wanda killed Coon’s villain.
The fact that Carrie Coon had no idea who killed her in Avengers: Infinity War when she was filming that scene makes their reunion in His Three Daughters more meaningful and, in a way, hilarious. Both Coon and Olsen found out together during the His Three Daughters press tour that Olsen killed Coon’s MCU character (via Facebook). The clip also features Lyonne asking Olsen and Coon for advice about entering the MCU during the His Three Daughters press tour. Olsen told Lyonne, “You’re very capable of figuring it out yourself.”
