Kate Middleton and Prince William aren’t spending Easter in Windsor with the royals this year.
While King Charles, Queen Camilla and other members of the royal family attended the Easter Matins Service at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor on April 20, the Prince and Princess of Wales spent the holiday over 100 miles away in Norfolk with their three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Prince William, 42, and Princess Kate, 43, are based in Windsor, where their children attend school nearby. However, they often escape to their country home on the Sandringham country estate, Anmer Hall, during school breaks
The British royal family traditionally attends the holiday church service at St. George’s Chapel on Easter Sunday. Although the Prince and Princess of Wales have been regulars at the gathering in recent years, with William attending the event since childhood, they skipped last year’s outing amid Princess Kate’s cancer news, which was announced just weeks before, and opted to spend the holiday privately with their children. In January, the Princess of Wales announced her cancer was in remission.
Prince William and Princess Kate most recently attended Easter with the royal family in 2023, when Prince Louis, who will turn 7 on April 23, joined for the first time. Louis’ debut came one year after his older siblings — Prince George, now 11, and Princess Charlotte, now 9 — attended the holiday church outing for the first time.
It was previously revealed that George, Charlotte and Louis have celebrated past Easters with a few well-known traditions, including an Easter egg hunt and lots of chocolate.
William said in 2020, “There will be a lot of chocolate being eaten here, don’t worry!” Kate then told her husband with a laugh, “You keep eating it!”
The Prince and Princess of Wales have reduced their royal duties in recent weeks, opting to spend time with their children during their school break leading up to Easter.
During the time out of the public eye, the family reportedly went on a ski trip in the French Alps. Prince William and Prince George also traveled to Paris, France, to support their favorite soccer team, Aston Villa, in their April 9 match against Paris Saint-Germain and also were spotted in the stands during the rematch in Birmingham on April 15.
Speaking with TNT Sports, Prince William said, “I thought, it’s been 43 years since anything like this has happened in my generation as a Villa fan, and I want George to experience a night out away from home in a big European competition,” referring to the team’s first European quarterfinal in over four decades. “I hope it’s not 43 years until the next time it happens, but I think those memories are really important to create and to bring him along tonight is a big deal for me.”
Although Prince William, Princess Kate and their family skipped the outing, King Charles and Queen Camilla continued the royal Easter tradition.
