Just In:Travis Kelce proves to Patrick Mahomes that Taylor Swift hasn’t changed him as Chiefs training camp begins
When you think of the Kansas City Chiefs, two names almost instantly leap to mind. Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes have been so integral to the Chiefs’ dominance of the past five years that they have become vital figures in the franchise’s six decades of history. Kelce and Mahomes are transformative stars who played huge roles in ending Kansas City’s 50-year Super Bowl drought in 2019 — and they didn’t stop there.
The Chiefs have added two more Super Bowl titles to their trophy cabinet after successive wins in 2022 and 2023. Kansas City in 2024 can become the first team in NFL history to win the sport’s showpiece game in three consecutive seasons — and top professionals like Kelce and Mahomes understand that the work to improve never ceases, no matter what the distractions are off the field.
It has been an offseason of controversy for the Chiefs, with Kansas City having to swat aside outrage at kicker Harrison Butker’s beliefs while working through legal troubles for Rashee Rice and since-released Isaiah Buggs. Even Kelce and Mahomes have spent much of the offseason out of the United States — Kelce followed girlfriend Taylor Swift around Europe on her Eras Tour, while Mahomes also spent time in Europe and confirmed he is expecting his third child with wife Brittany.
Mahomes and Kelce are kicking off their eighth season together, and took their first steps toward re-establishing chemistry on the first full day of camp on Sunday, on the campus of Missouri Western State University. Early indications are that the superstar pair is picking up exactly where they left off in 2023.
During 7-on-7 play, Mahomes uncorked a highlight-reel throw to Kelce, finding him for a 20-yard gain on a day in which the two-time MVP got to know first-round pick Xavier Worthy with a 60-yard touchdown pass. Whether Kelce faced tight coverage from a teammate, or whether he found himself with a little separation, the four-time All-Pro knew where the ball was going — and his quarterback knew just where to put it.
With Mahomes and Kelce quickly syncing back up, the Chiefs finally get a bit of good news in what has been a tumultuous few months since the Super Bowl LVIII victory in Las Vegas. As long as those two remain healthy and on the same page, Kansas City is still, undoubtedly, the NFL’s team to beat — as boring as it may sound.
