Patrick Mahomes owns up to two mistakes he made in front of Taylor Swift

Patrick Mahomes has held his hands up after making two big mistakes for the Kansas City Chiefs in their Sunday Night Football showdown with the New York Jets.

All eyes were on MetLife Stadium with Taylor Swift in attendance alongside Mahomes wife, Brittany, to watch teammate Travis Kelce. After a red-hot start for the Chiefs offense, things started to go wrong as the Jets staged a comeback.

Mahomes in particular made two uncharacteristic errors, throwing two interceptions – one on a pass intended for Kelce – as they allowed the Jets back into the game. Eventually, Mahomes worked his magic in the fourth quarter to ensure they escaped with a 23-20 win.

After the game, the reigning NFL MVP owned up and offered no excuses for his two interceptions, admitting he should never have attempted to complete the passes he did.

“I just got to throw the ball away,” Mahomes said postgame. “They covered both plays well. But instead of just throwing the ball away, I tried to make perfect throws.

“You just got to know when you can take those chances and at that time, at those points in the game, I can’t do that. I can’t turn it over and put that pressure on our defense.

“But they stepped up for me. It’s football. It’s the NFL. Not everything’s going to be easy.”

Despite not enjoying some parts of the game, Mahomes recognises the need to “win ugly”. The way they were able to do that on a tricky night in New York underlined why he believes they can emulate what they did last year on their Super Bowl run.

“You have to find a way to win in different ways,” Mahomes continued. “And I’ve learned that over my career.

“I’ve learned in my six or seven years you can win pretty, but you have to win ugly, too, in order to win Super Bowls. For me, even though I hate it while it’s happening, I feel like it makes you better in the end if you win games like this where not everything is going perfect.

“We did that last year, and we’re going to try to do that again this year and then try to keep getting better so we’re playing our best football at the end of the season.”

Mahomes and the Chiefs moved to 3-1 with their win over the Jets. They are back in action against the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium in Week 5.
