U.S. presidential candidate Kamala Harris concluded her debate with Donald Trump using Taylor Swift’s song “The Man.”
September 11, Harris drew attention as she left the debate stage with the song playing in the background. The lyrics include: “I’m so sick of running as fast as I can. Wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man.” Before wrapping up her speech, she told supporters, “Hard work is a good thing. And we will win.”
“The Man” is from Taylor Swift’s seventh album, “Lover,” released in 2019. The song, which has a feminist theme, critiques the double standards in society that favor men. In the music video, Swift portrays a wealthy white man with various flaws who is still celebrated by others. Forbes has described this song as the most important track on the album, reflecting the gender discrimination women face daily.
Kamala Harris chose to use Taylor Swift’s music after the singer publicly endorsed her, calling the candidate a “warrior for justice” on Instagram the same day. Swift wrote, “I believe this woman is a strong, talented leader, and I think our country can achieve so much more when led by calmness instead of chaos.”
Additionally, she announced her support for Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as vice president. Swift expressed her “warmth and admiration” for Harris’s choice of Walz, who has consistently advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF issues, and “women’s rights to make decisions about their own bodies,” referring to abortion rights.
In response to Taylor Swift, Tim Walz thanked her during a live interview on MSNBC. He stated, “First and foremost, I am incredibly grateful to her. Her words are powerful and clear. This is the courage that the people of America need.”
This marks Taylor Swift’s first statement regarding the 2024 presidential race. The artist has typically been cautious about political issues, limiting her personal expressions. With her vast fan base, her stance draws significant attention. According to Hollywood Reporter, political analysts believe Swift’s voting decision “could play a crucial role” in influencing election outcomes. Previously, she supported Joe Biden and Kamala Harris during the 2020 campaign, marking her first public endorsement of a presidential candidate.
At 35 years old, Taylor Swift is an American singer-songwriter who rose to fame with her country music in 2006. After releasing ten albums, she has won 14 Grammy Awards and 29 Billboard Awards. In December 2023, Guinness recognized “The Eras Tour” as the highest-grossing tour of all time, surpassing $1 billion in revenue. The singer’s net worth is approximately $1.1 billion.
