Jenna Fischer who played secretary Pam Beesly and Angela Kinsey who played accountant Angela Martin in The Office, discuss their experience of starring in the show in the podcast Office Ladies. In one of the recent episodes of this podcast, it was revealed how they got the rights to include one of John Mayer’s Your Body is a Wonderland in the episode A Benihana Christmas, which is episodes 10 and 11 of season 3 of the show.
John Mayer was reluctant at first but had a change of mind later which he mentioned in a blog post about this whole thing. In the post, he pointed out that while he is not sorry for any of his work, but he is not often asked if he would allow a movie or show to use Your Body is a Wonderland. According to Fisher, in the post, Mayer wrote:
don’t get asked to use “Wonderland” for strongman competitions and documentaries about aircraft carriers. I usually get asked so that people can goof on it. So I initially turned down their request. But after thinking about it, I decided to go for it. But with one stipulation.
The condition under which John Mayer agreed to let The Office use his song was that he would be given a Dundie which is an award that Steve Carell’s character Michael Scott annually gives from Dunder Mifflin Scranton to the employees for their outstanding performance. Mayer got the award from B. J. Novak for being the ‘Tallest Music Dude’.
