Breaking đ¨ âHe Says Itâs in Americaâs Interestâ â But Whereâs the Proof? Professor Robert Spitzer Speaks Out
Recent action in Iran has shown many of his supporters are still sticking by him â but others are questioning the intervention.
Political analyst and distinguished Service Professor Robert Spitzer, author of four books on the American presidency, told Metro that, from Trumpâs point of view, a war with Iran is considered âAmerica firstâ.
âHe insists this is in Americaâs interestsâthough he has not produced a consistent rationale for starting this war,â Spitzer told Metro.
But this latest action does contradict his pledge to avoid foreign wars, of which he has been harshly critical in the past. His base now finds itself split because they have mostly supported his promise to avoid wars with other nations.â
Some Trump voters told Metro they were outraged over what they fear could turn into another lengthy war.
Others praised military action, which, they say, âshould have happened years agoâ.
A base of supporters split down the middle
Tucker*, a 27-year-old who identifies as an Independent but voted for Trump in 2024, said heâs upset with the presidentâs actions in Iran.
âDuring the election, I just picked the least crazy option, but at the end of the day, I feel like both sides of the aisle have one thing in common: weâre just picking the one we think is the least crazy,â he told Metro.
âKhamenei was objectively not a great guy, considering how oppressive Iran has been toward their people and toward women. Trump was making a decision that he felt was best for national security, but Iâm not a fan of it.â
Tucker said he thinks Trumpâs actions could turn into another Iraq or Afghanistan, which he says no voters want.
âIf he puts boots on the ground over there, heâll go down as one of the worst presidents ever, labelled only as âBush 2.0â. All I can do is hope that itâs not a forever war. Itâs not what I voted for, obviously,â he added.
ââPart of me has wondered if he began this Iran mess to distract from whatâs going on domestically with the Epstein files and ICE. It just seems too convenient.â
Trump voter Mark, 58, disagrees.
He told Metro: âThe idea of going into Iran to act as a distraction over something domestic, like the Epstein files, is absurd. No one would go to that extreme to create a distraction.â
âWith Trump being in the position heâs in, I donât think itâs going to be a long-term war, â Mark said. âSo, I donât think it goes against what he said about ending âforever warsâ. I think itâs a preemptive effort to alleviate tension in the future.â
Comparisons have been made between the US action in Iran this week and the tensions which led up to the Iraq war in the early 2000s, but Mark believes this attack in Iran is different.
He said: âLook at it this way: You have a country that has been under the suppression of a religious leader for many years. The people have had no say in what they want as individuals, so this is a liberation effort for them.
âItâs either take out that suppressing leadership or just sit there like previous administrations, throwing money at it and offering lip service. If you have common sense and understand that there is short-term pain for long-term gain, youâll understand whatâs going on.â
